Apr 30, 2023

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — The emaciated inmate in black shorts lay on a thin mat in Haiti's most notorious prison, isolated from other prisoners at Port-au-Prince's National Penitentiary because of drug-resistant tuberculosis.

He slowly sat up to talk to a visiting reporter and more than 70 fellow tuberculosis patients gathered at the door of the neighboring cell to complain about their suffering while detained, many on minor charges like theft.

Jess Williamson's fifth solo album "Time Ain't Accidental" takes place on a lyrical road trip that unpacks America, its western landscapes, reckless storms and evanescent roots, transforming country music's legacy into her own search for redemption, writes Associated Press reviewer Amancai Biraben. Love is both a delusion and a cure as her lyrics trace her roots in Texas, reinvention in California and all the pitstops in between. Mapping her heart along the desert zephyrs, country stores and two-step bars, Williamson paints a picture of love in all its pain and glory.

As the smoke from the Canadian wildfires lifted from the New York area, Belmont Park was allowed to reopen Friday and Saturday's Belmont Stakes was back on.

Officials from the University of New Haven and Yale held a special graduation ceremony inside a maximum-security prison in Connecticut. Seven inmates and parolees received their associate degrees in general studies on Friday. It was the first graduating class in partnership between the UNH's Prison Education Program and the Yale Prison Education Initiative. The program is part of a consortium that includes schools and prison systems across the country. UNH officials say just over 20% of inmates receive some form of higher education in prison and studies have shown that those who do are far less likely to commit crimes once they are released.

Former North Carolina state Commerce Secretary Jim Fain has died at age 80. He was the state's primary economic recruiter during Democratic Gov. Mike Easley's eight years in office. Fain's son said Friday that his father died on Wednesday in Raleigh after a period of declining health. During his tenure he helped bring in companies from the pharmaceutical, financial services and aviation sectors to build and expand in the state. Another Easley administration official credited Fain with helping create the state's chief financial incentives program still in use today, called the Job Development Investment Grant. A memorial service will be held next week.

Michigan State University says it will use $300,000 in donations to create a memorial to honor students who were killed or wounded in a mass shooting in February. The memorial was disclosed Friday as the university announced what it will do with $2 million given to the Spartan Strong Fund. Three students died and five more were wounded when a gunman fired inside two campus buildings on Feb. 13. The gunman killed himself away from campus when confronted by police. Approximately $1 million will support people directly affected by the shooting, especially injured students who want to continue to pursue their education.

National champion UConn added some shooting depth to its roster Friday, announcing the signing of former Rutgers guard Cam Spencer from the transfer portal. Spencer, who graduated last month with a year of eligibility remaining, averaged 13.2 points for the Scarlet Knights last season. The 6-foot-4 guard shot 44.4% from the floor, including 43.4% from 3-point range. The Huskies lost their top 3-point scoring threat, sophomore Jordan Hawkins, to the NBA draft, along with wing Andre Jackson Jr. and post Adama Sanogo. Guard Tristen Newtown gave the Huskies a boost last month, withdrawing his name from the draft pool.

A Texas appeals court has dismissed a billionaire's defamation lawsuit against Democrat Beto O’Rouke that was brought over his criticism of a $1 million campaign contribution to Republican Gov. Greg Abbott. The ruling Friday by the Third Court of Appeals in Austin comes more than a year after O’Rourke repeatedly made critical remarks about the donation by Kelcy Warren during a failed run for governor. Warren is chairman of Energy Transfer, a pipeline company that reported billions of dollars in earnings after a catastrophic winter storm sent natural gas prices soaring in Texas. The court ruled that a reasonable person would view O'Rourke's comments as hyperbole that is commonplace in political campaigns.

He was the mayor who reveled in the glory of hosting the 2012 London Olympics, and the man who led the Conservatives to a whopping election victory on the back of his mission to "get Brexit done." But Boris Johnson's time as prime minister was marred by his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and a steady stream of ethics allegations. Here is a timeline of events relating to Johnson's political career

LANSING, Mich. — The leaders of the Michigan Republican Party are expected to vote Saturday on a plan to use a two-part system to pick which GOP candidates for president will win the state's delegates to the national convention in July 2024.

The Republican National Committee launched a persuasion campaign this week to persuade the party's voters to use mail ballots in 2024, after four years of GOP candidates — including a president — falsely claiming that route inevitably leads to election fraud.

Congress will consider rolling back an Obama-era rule that requires airlines to show the total cost of a ticket when advertising fares. Republicans and Democrats on the House Transportation Committee proposed Friday to let airlines exclude taxes and fees from advertised fares, as long as the full price is available by clicking a hyperlink or through some other way. That's in a bill to reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration for five more years. The bill would also make it slightly easier to become an airline pilot by increasing the amount of training that can be done in simulators instead of flying a plane.

Manchester City faces Inter Milan in European club soccer's biggest game. Pep Guardiola's team has already won the Premier League title and FA Cup this season and is bidding to win the Champions League for the first time in the club's history. Inter is the underdog, but has a more storied history in Europe than City, having won the trophy three times previously. It is in its first final since winning the competition in 2010 under Jose Mourinho. City will emulate Manchester United's feat from 1999 if it wins the three biggest trophies in one season.

A Florida professor known as "Dr. Deep" has resurfaced after spending a record 100 days living underwater. Dr. Joseph Dituri raised his face to the sun Friday for the first time since March 1. That's when he started living in an underwater lodge for scuba divers at the bottom of a lagoon in Key Largo. His stay set a new record for living underwater without depressurization, shattering the previous mark of 73 days. Dituri says his interest was never about entering the record books but rather expanding knowledge about how the body responds to extended exposure to extreme pressure and isolation. The University of South Florida educator hopes to present findings from his experiment at a conference this fall.

Even with his team currently in the NBA Finals, Nuggets general manager Calvin Booth continues to look for ways to improve his team.

Zach Wilson never expected to be here at this point in his NFL career. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 draft is the New York Jets’ backup quarterback behind Aaron Rodgers. It has been a two-year stretch that has seen Wilson go from the future of the franchise to a reclamation project. Wilson says he's not bitter the Jets brought in Rodgers because he simply didn't play well. Wilson is instead putting his struggles behind him and embracing the chance to learn how to be successful from the player he idolized while growing up.

The Milwaukee Brewers made some adjustments to their bullpen by sending left-hander Bennett Sousa and right-hander Jake Cousins to the 15-day injured list and recalling right-hander Tyson Miller from Triple-A Nashville. Cousins’ assignment is retroactive to Sunday as he deals with right shoulder inflammation. The Brewers also sent right-hander Jason Alexander to their Arizona Complex League as he recovers from his shoulder injury.

The criminal indictment unsealed by the Justice Department against Donald Trump includes allegations that the former president stored classified documents in a bathroom and shower at his Florida club and suggested his lawyers conceal the presence of some documents. The indictment also accuses Trump of showing off the documents to people without security clearances and acknowledging that he didn't have the ability to declassify documents after he left the White House. The indictment says Trump told his attorneys he was "an open book" on the same day that his valet secretly loaded several boxes of documents on an aircraft.

The Kansas governor has named a high-ranking U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration official to head the state highway patrol. Erik Smith will replace a retiring superintendent who is facing federal lawsuits over the agency's policing and allegations that he sexually harassed female employees. Gov. Laura Kelly's appointment Friday of Smith as superintendent came on the last day on the job for retiring Superintendent Herman Jones. Smith is set to take over as superintendent July 7. Smith is a native of the small central Kansas town of Ellsworth and served nine years with the Sedgwick County sheriff's office in Wichita before joining the DEA.

Pitcher Matt Dermody was cut by the Boston Red Sox, a day after he made his first major league start and said he regretted making a homophobic tweet two years ago. The 32-year-old left-hander was designated for assignment as part of a flurry of roster moves. Boston has seven days to trade him or place him on waivers. Toronto Blue cut pitcher Anthony Bass earlier Friday, one day after the right-handed reliever said he didn't think an anti-LGBTQ+ social media post he shared last month was hateful. Boston also activated outfielder Adam Duvall from the 60-day injured list.

The Tennessee Titans hired Sarah Bailey as their new director of football research and development. The Titans announced the hiring Friday. This is the latest front office addition since controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk hired Ran Carthon as the franchise's first Black general manager in January.

Starting next year, owners of electric vehicles made by General Motors and Ford will be able to charge their EVs at many of Tesla's charging stations, the largest such network in the country. As part of their move, both Detroit-area automakers have decided to adopt Tesla's EV charging connector, the plug that links an electric vehicle to a charging station. With GM and Ford joining Tesla's charging system, the rest of the auto industry may be forced follow suit. If so, it would provide a major victory to Tesla, which would be assured a new and guaranteed revenue stream for years to come.

LOS ANGELES — After months of anticipation, El Niño has officially arrived.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana is arguing in a federal lawsuit that a new state law's provision barring teachers from providing instruction on "human sexuality" to students from pre-K through third grade is unconstitutional. The group also says in its lawsuit filed Friday that it is so vague that teachers wouldn't know whether they are complying with it. The lawsuit targets a portion of a law that also requires schools to notify a parent if a student requests a name or pronoun change at school. It names Indiana's secretary of education as the defendant. The Indiana attorney general's office is not immediately commenting.

PHILADELPHIA — President Joe Biden will return to Philadelphia on June 17 to rally with union members in his first political event since announcing reelection, campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz told The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Florida is now 7-0 in overtime in these playoffs after Carter Verhaeghe scored to end OT in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Thursday night. No team over the last seven seasons has more playoff OT wins than Florida, which is 10-0 in its last 10 postseason games that have gone past the 60-minute mark — and the Panthers weren't even in the playoffs for three of those years. They have more playoff overtime wins this year than any two other teams in the NHL combined, and Sergei Bobrovsky has stopped all 56 shots that he's faced after regulation this spring.

The Florida Panthers all like to argue before overtime on who's going to score the winning goal. They don't really care who individually gets that goal, as long as someone in Panthers colors does. Florida is now 7-0 in overtime in these playoffs after Carter Verhaeghe scored to end OT in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Thursday night. That goal pulled the Panthers within 2-1 of the Vegas Golden Knights in the title series. Game 4 is Saturday at Florida.
